About The Newsroom

If you have not heard of the new American television series called The Newsroom, you need to learn more about this new HBO drama that is gaining fans quickly.  The Newsroom TV series focuses on the events that are taking place behind the scenes at a channel called ACN, or Atlantis Cable News.  (The channel does not actually exist in real life, so don’t trouble yourself looking for it).  This series is the latest offering from television series creator Aaron Sorkin, who is well known for his prior series The West Wing, which won Emmy Awards.

The lead role in The Newsroom is that of news anchor Will McAvoy.  This role is played by actor Jeff Daniels, whom you may remember from his role in the Oscar Award winning film Terms of Endearment.  When he is on camera in the show anchoring the news, he is cordial and warm, but when the show is off the air he returns to a rather grumpy disposition.  The pilot episode sees Will McAvoy abandoned by his former co-anchor Don Keefer, who is played by Thomas Sadoski.  Keefer takes a large portion of the newsroom staff with him when he leaves.  This leads a new producer taking over the show and the job goes to MacKenzie McHale, who McAvoy knows from his past.  The part of MacKenZie McHale is played by Emily Mortimer who you may remember from the television show 30 rock.

The cast of The Newsroom includes many talented actors, including Tony Award winning John Gallagher, Jr. in the role of James Harper – otherwise known as Jim.  Jim has come along from MacKenzie McHale’s former station, and in fact gave up the chance for a promotion in order to follow her to her new home at ACN.  While at ACN, he develops an interest in associate producer Margaret Jordan – otherwise known as Maggie.  The role of Maggie is played by Allison Pill, who is known for her performance in the movie Milk, and her role in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  It remains to be seen whether sparks will fly between Jim and Maggie, but the potential is definitely there!

There are other interesting and compelling characters on The Newsroom as well.  One of them is Neal Sampat, who is portrayed by actor Dev Patel.  Sampat covered the bombings in London via a camera phone, and now works writing McAvoy’s blog.  Actress Olivia Munn plays financial analyst Sloan Sabbith, who has a show of her own on ACN.  The president of ACN is Charlie Skinner, who is portrayed by Sam Waterston.  Last but not least, Jane Fonda plays the role of the CEO of ACN’s parent company, Atlantis World Media.

This show is on HBO, and premiered in June of 2012, so if you start watching now you will not need long to catch up.  The Newsroom tv series provides viewers with an intimate look at what goes on in a newsroom while the cameras are off.  Through it all, the characters try their best to navigate the corporate world of news while trying their best to remain true to themselves.
