Bunheads is a fun and heartwarming new American television series about a woman named Michelle Sims. Michelle was formerly a ballerina, or ‘bunhead,’ who through a series of twists and turns in her life ends up working as a Vegas showgirl. Michelle feels that her life is in a place she is not happy with, and seeing no viable career options unfolding before her, she decides to accept the marriage proposal of Hubbell Flowers, who is her longtime admirer. She and Hubbell move to Paradise, where Michelle teaches ballet classes at her new mother-in-law’s ballet studio.
From the very start of the show it is clear that Michelle seems to have her share of bad luck. One major incident takes place in the pilot episode that truly tests Michelle’s character (but more cannot be said on the issue for the risk of giving it away – you should see for yourself!) Michelle and her mother-in-law Fanny who owns The Paradise Dance Academy have their differences, but are able to work together when it matters the most. Throughout all of the challenges she faces, Michelle learns to rely on herself and her friends, and comes out the other side a wiser and kinder ‘bunhead’ despite all of it.
The Bunheads tv series cast contains some great talent. The lead role of Michelle Sims is played by Sutton Foster, who is a two time Tony award winning former Broadway actor. Actress Kaitlyn Jenkins plays the role of Bettina Jordan, otherwise known as ‘Boo,’ who is a dancer at The Paradise Dance Academy. Bailey Buntain plays the part of another dancer, Ginny Thompson, who is as shy and self-conscious as she is talented at ballet. Emma Dumont plays the role of high-spirited and fun-loving Melanie Segal who is yet another ‘bunhead’ from the dance school. Julia Goldani Tellis rounds out the main cast of ‘bunheads’ as Sasha Torres, a wonderfully talented dancer who finds herself distracted by a rough home life. Last but not least, Kelly Bishop (who you may remember as Emily Gilmore from the long-running tv series Gilmore Girls) stars in the role of Fanny Flowers, Michelle’s mother-in-law who runs the Paradise Dance Academy.
Bunheads does a great job of giving viewers an intimate look into the life of a ‘Bunhead.’ One of the best aspects of the show is how it is able to use a lighthearted tone while also examining serious issues in the ballet world, including eating disorders and body image problems that some dancers face. Additionally, the dancers on the show are all very talented ballet dancers, which gives the show further authenticity, as viewers can see the characters they love dancing their hearts out every show.
If you are looking for a fun and family friendly television show, Bunheads is a great choice. Best of all, exposing your children to the art of ballet is sure to inspire them to be more active in their everyday lives. Watch Bunheads with your children and you may have budding ballet dancer or two on your hands before you know it!
